Does the USA not have direct bank payments from one bank to another or something?
In Australia and New Zealand, you can pay for things by typing in someone's bank account in your online banking and sending money straight into their bank account. It shows up 24 hours later. There are no fees for most accounts. Credit cards are only really used for utilities and overseas purchases, or for convenience.
People make $2 purchases on Ebay / TradeMe (NZ Ebay clone) using their online banking.
Getting this would not only be really really convenient and one of the best things about the internet, but eliminate this whole BS payment processor cancelling payment rubbish.
