If Pence had said a month before "I'm not willing to do exercise the power of the VP to exclude dubious electors" or "I don't think the Constitution gives the VP the power to exclude dubious electors" his actions would've been reasonable and expected on Jan 6th. Instead, he signaled up until an hour before that he was going to do something, then changed his mind (or revealed the truth) at the last moment.
If your unmarried partner says "I'm leaving you, and I hope never to see you again." It isn't a betrayal if he or she sees someone else a month later, but if he or she insists everything is cool until an hour before a date with someone else, that definitely is.
