If a woman shows up at the ER with a black eye and claims she fell, they call the police to investigate a possible domestic violence incident. Because you don't get black eyes from falling. You get them from being punched in the eye.
When I was a kid I slipped on the ice and fell and smacked my face on the ground. Ended up with a nice shiner. Other kids at school busted on me for getting beat up. It does happen.
It does happen, I would suspect that shiner was more on your cheek bone then around your eye socket. Plus you probably had cuts on your hands and knees, unless you are knocked out before you fall, your body does amazing things to prevent the head from hitting the ground. That reflex causes damage to your hands and knees.
Like I said, ER nurses and doctors are literally trained to spot signs of domestic violence. A black eye without extreme evidence of a fall is sure signs of abuse. If a lady comes in with a black eye, says she fell, and her hands and knees are intact, her husband is going to jail.
