Enlisted, Union, 9-button, blue-piping infantry, lost his breast-eagle plate, moved his cartridge box around to be seen on camera, otherwise it would be further back. Bayonet scabbard for .58 cal. Springfield rifle. He's seen the elephant.

I’m sure that I understand what you mean from the context, but what does “seen the elephant” derive from?

Some say it derives from soldiers who survived fighting against Alexander the Great's elephant troops. Others say it simple means gaining experience the hard way - under fire or through a great ordeal.
