I'll wager a guess from my perspective. Schools, in general, are not providing quality learning experiences and are at best unreliable in the "baby sitting" aspect of schooling. So parents are not deeply concerned with their kids going to school (or signing into class) and have found alternative avenues of education and daycare.
Even if they find other avenues, they still have to unregister the kids from school. Can't just not send 'em there if they're registered, that's still truancy. So the headline, (given it is clickbaity MSM chucklefuckery) would suggest that these kids aren't logging in to virtual class, or the software isn't registering it.
