In RI, a local school union didn't like a dual language program that teaches 1/2 the day in spanish because it requires teachers to have a dual language cert so not all in the district could apply for openings.
The union looked at enrollment, and called the program racist because it did not have the arbitrary diversity they made up. Enrollment was by people signing up and selections were by a lottery, but to attack the program they said was taking jobs from teachers they said a program that teaches 1/2 the day in spanish was racist.
They even said parents who were defending the program were showing white privilege and supporting racist polices. No lie. Crazy.
Its good as it helps kids thing of things as concepts and creatively as they go between languages, but the Union hates it as the school district is shrinking and non dli teachers can't directly transfer to it without getting a cert, which will be fully paid for.
They went to calling it racist to keep it from expanding.
Personally, I am not a fan of homework. If a student is in school six or seven hours a day that is ample time to get work done. The rest of the day should be for athletics, activities, volunteering, mowing the lawn, cooking dinner, babysitting, or whatever productive thing they want to pursue. No wonder kids are obese. Too much sitting all day at school and then sitting at night studying. Make the school day more efficient and focused.
In my son's Senior year they would have pride parades in school. I live in Washington state and there are PLENTY of pride parades kids could go to ON THEIR OWN TIME. They don't need to waste school time on that.
Did I mention how grateful I am that my son is out of public high school. I went my rounds with that school in the last 2 years of my son's high school years but Senior year took the cake.
By their logic air can actually be racist simply because in some 3rd world countries, air quality is terrible. They think everything some people don't have is racist so clean air is actually racist.
