Having a big army shouldn't be a problem as they have a massive number of obedient nationalistic people, so the problem is military technology? But aren't they good at math and engineering type things?

Who needs an army when you can make the whole world dance from your puppet strings?
They have a ton of people, and will just overwhelm opposing forces with wave after wave of human wave attacks.
I think you're info might be out of date. They've really increased their military might over the past decade.
They have not been a country that long. More of a region with swaying power grabs. They also closed up for a long time. Stopped exploring, inventing and many parts of the country do not speak Mandarin or the main language. Add to that no real experience fighting wars outside their own country which is not that easy. Just from the recent skirmishes with India they are not really holding their own. Hell, if not for Nixon and pushing to clean up the main Yangtze river of junk they would still be in the dark. Couldn't trade with them. The main problem though is combined arms which is extremely difficult. We figured it out but it's still not perfect. More like a rough game of golf.
It makes me wonder if it's possible the current communist surge in the US is less China and more the old Soviet Union leaving us a little surprise
You answered your own question. No need for a massive standing army with a force of keyboard warriors
Yes, maybe part of it is their personality that makes them prefer being the masters of poison to physical force.
