My mother was a teacher for decades. She loved it. Then she got to the inner city and was locked in to a union contract. A good chunk of her salary was given to the union in fees and dues. She wasn't allowed to do any after school tutoring as they had one designated for that. So if a student needed extra help, she had to bring in a complete outsider. The other teachers in the union ridiculed and harassed her because she was the outsider. The white woman from the suburbs daring to try and educate black kids in the city. All the other teachers were black at that school. They hated her. They didn't support her. They turned a woman who loved to teach and help kids in to someone who hated children. They effectively killed the part of my warm loving and caring mother, which turned her in to a cold, distant, bitter person. She finally found passion for teaching again at a few catholic schools. Which I was glad to see. No unions allowed there and the teachers all truly banded together to help each other. Before my mom passed, I had talked to her about her time teaching, dealing with unions, etc. She said that Unions would be the death of education.
There's where she took the wrong fork in the road. Inner city schools will do that. I'm glad she found some peace again, but why did she leave the suburbs? Those kids need educating too, and will at least appreciate it.
She took a job wherever she could get one. The schools in the areas around us at the time didn't need people. The city was the only place looking. Then she found out why.

She was 1000% right.

Yeah I feel you. I taught at a ghetto school for a few years for the same reason.
Same. Only for two years. Almost left the profession.
