Side Note: Read "Cat in the Hat" as an adult. That cat is a sexual predator. (Men can be called "cats") Thing 1 and Thing 2 represent the male/female genitalia. It's a pretty twisted tale when looked with eyes open. Poor fish trying to protect those kids. Maybe after that book hit the big time, Dr. Seus or whoever had to tweek the cat's image to more innocent. The sequel book doesn't appear to have as many double meanings in it. (Though I don't know what "Voom" is)
