I thought it was suspicious too, that everyone started using zoom immediately, whether it was schools or official hearings. I had never heard of Zoom before COVID. Why didn't they use Skype, GoToMeeting, LogMeIn, VNC, or another well-known service...
You guys are right. I've done remote work for over 15 years. No one ever used nor heard of Zoom. Most of the time it was GoToMeeting or something with corporate branding for enterprises.
Zoom was a WTF moment for anyone doing conference calls for years. It was all over the covid news too - hey if you are remote, just use Zoom. Very coerced.
Even now, job interviews I have want to use Zoom. These are established companies who act like it's the hottest, freshest pancake.

Government around here, at least the agencies I'm familiar with, heavily use Cisco WebEx.
