Or, you know, he could pick someone not based on race or gender, but based on their qualifications.

That's not how a vice presidential pick works....

They are often times picked for optics.... Traditionally the vice president really doesn't do much. Only a few Presidents throughout history have actually given the vice president substantial jobs to do while in office.....

Legally all they are required to do is sit back and look pretty in case something happens to the President, while occasionally casting a tie-breaking vote.

So it's easy to understand why many times that position is picked to help optics... Especially since elections are all about optics....

If Trump picked the right black person it could be a very smart move.... And considering there are quite a few qualified black candidates that are just as good if not better than many of the obvious white candidates, I don't really see the problem....

The only people who think this is out of character for Trump are people who actually listen to the mainstream narrative about him being a racist....

Just because that is how they often do it, doesn't mean it's right. If someone is going to be next in line to be the POTUS, especially considering Trump's age, it should be someone with the best qualifications, not a token pick. We need to move away from identity politics.
