in summer 2012 there was a solar flare or corona eruption that would have destroyed all our electrical and communications infrastructure. similar to the carrington event in 1859 (that destroyed the only electrical/communications infrastructure which was the trans-atlantic telegraph cable). that event missed us by only 9 days
