So much hate for Reagan because of the amnesty. Sure, it was a massive cockup, but back then parties did do grand compromises, and they were often upheld. The Dems were more conservative than now and the idea of whites becoming a minority wasn't really seen as plausible by many. He was a great POTUS, despite this cockup. It was 12 years of Bushes and 16 of Dems that made demographics disastrous, not a one off mistake.
