I’d say you’re right, over the last 5 or 6 years, especially with things going browser-based and into the cloud, M$ hasn’t been necessary outside of gaming (get an Xbox or PS4) and a few niche applications.
Plus you can run Linux on older computers that Windows would crap out on. I use Linus Mint Cinnamon version which is the most like Windows 7. Very light footprint and it comes with Libre Office for free. Libre Office color matches MS Office but also includes a database, and drawing application which are robust without being bloated.

People need to know that for atleast the last 6 years Linux has been much easier to get along with than the crap from MS.
... and its faster.
... and it almost never 'crashes'. Especially not for any of the bullshit reasons Windows does.
... and it just works without a bazillion driver updates and installs.
... AND it doesn't need antivirus, because it has always been secure.

Mint Cinnamon is extremely nimble and stable, I also highly recommend it!
