I went with a Rav4 for off road desert driving and snow, and the little beast gets up and down ungraded ATV trails just fine. Hell I take it up and down a 20 degree incline (way steeper than it sounds).
I was going to do a 4Runner but I regularly have to drive 90 miles a day and the difference between 15 MPG and 30 MPG was a no brainer.
I'd like low gas prices too, but don't pretend that 95% of the people who drive trucks actually use them for anything you'd use a truck for.

Gas is up .50/gal here. Got 3/4 tank for the same money of a full tank last year the other day. Bought lumber today, building an addition to the shop. Spent $67 on a few 2x4's, screws and a couple of 1x6's. The gas was ten damn dollars for the trip. Was $40 or less last year and I wouldn't have even monitored the fuel. When you are incredibly rich (dims) or broke af/own nothing (libs) you could care less.

If you live in an area with snow, or even gravel and rocky roads, it's best to have a truck.
