He is a tool of those in power. He is there to say what they want and when the time comes to criticize you for not going along with those in power they will point at the pope and say something like "even the pope agrees this is the way...you wouldn't defy god would you?" as if he is 'the leader of the Christians" and you must follow now. There will always be a pope as long as that tool is useful.
