There is a third explanation, which is actually the logical explanation. Mitch McConnell blocked the House bill that was rewritten after Trump demanded that Americans receive a $2,000 check, instead of the $600 checks that were sent out.
So, those in GA who were in dire straits had to make Mitch the minority leader so the bill would not continue to be blocked. Biden promised the $1,400 checks if both Ossoff & Warnock won because Schumer would become majority leader and Mitch would no longer have the power to block the bill.
Also, demographic change. GA was trending blue for a while now, especially because the majority of new 18+ voters are heavily Democratic voters. GA is not alone demographic changes are heading for Texas next.
If the establishment GOP continues to support corporations over people, and they do not start coming up with popular policies of their own they may never win a Presidential election for the next few generations. Once we lose Texas, our party is fucked!
It's illogical to apply your own logic on how voters vote. Most voters don't think the way you describe.
Look at the 2016-2020 shift by state. Why would your explanation (or any other explanation short of "magic" or "fraud") only apply to Georgia (+5 Dem shift) and not neighboring Florida (-2)?
We're just talking about the Presidential election. The special Senate elections were after the very demoralizing blow to Republicans, so there was a cascade effect of people losing interest in politics.
Yes, Georgia is the 2nd most African American state (not counting DC). But that's growing at only around 0.2% percentage points per year, or less than a percentage point between elections. Same for Latino.
Trump made gains with the African American and other minority vote, which could offset the effect of minority population growth. And, thanks to decades of abortion on demand, religious conservatives should be experiencing higher fertility rates, and thus electoral benefit from natural population growth.
Correct regarding Texas: because of the massive Latino population, and plans to import many millions more. But Georgia is not a top immigrant destination, so that doesn't concern the "2020 miracle" in question.
