The thing about affirmative action style hiring is that you always have to question whether people in elevated positions earned it fairly. Same for politicians. Were they elected because they were best qualified or because they had a useful complexion? And it runs on both sides, because the right can't get minority leaders without being accused of tokenism.
If we just set out with the clear policy and moral goal of hiring the best qualified and most appropriate person for a task, regardless of race or gender, we wouldn't have to doubt their accomplishments.
