I think you can use 87 my friend, I had an older VTEC and those used 87, bought a car with CVT a few years ago and the dealer said the same thing, though it's not a VTEC, not sure if anything has changed recently.

You don’t understand octane ratings, clearly. If your car isn’t forced induction you don’t need higher octane. Use regular gas
