I grew up on Long Island. Not far from my house was Sewanhaka High School. It was named after the Sewanhaka Tribe, who used to live on the island. Their football team was, not surprisingly, The "Sewanhaka Indians." Then, when I was in college, I heard they were under pressure from people (Read: Stupid Fucking Suburban White Karens) to change it, because it was unkind to the Indians.

But nobody wanted to change the name of the school. They wanted to keep the name, and the land... but remove the images of the people who used to own that name and land.

That, to me, always smacked not of showing RESPECT for the tribe (which still exists, they were fine with the team having the name, mind you,) but rather of GUILT. Like the Telltale Heart. That if these White Guilt Retard Karens could just take the imagery of the Indians and seal it under the floorboards, then they could finally sleep.

People are maddening.
