This is good to know, but that would still look terrible. When was the last time a president did that instead of a speech?

In 1945, President Franklin Roosevelt's address was read to a Joint Session of the House and Senate. Since the President did not deliver the address, it does not count as an in-person address.

He was very sick too.

Yeah he died pretty quick after that leaving Harry Truman to get the nukes deployed.
