He wants to take away the ability of the Governor to appoint the vacancy and give it to the GOP state legislatures.
This is BAD. Because he has his claws real deep in in state politics and he already has dude he's groomed and mentored lining up to carry on his vision. Not only his vision, but they have their own insane vision to likely go after because they have to do it bigger and better to leave their mark on history.
And why would McConnell just leave before his term is up? It wouldn't be because he knows he won't win. His ego is huge. He'd stay until the last day of his term if that was the case. And guys who don't have to worry about what happens down the road are the most dangerous since they can just support/pass/side whatever they want and not care. It makes them loose cannons.
Again, why would he just leave before his term is up? Is it because he got paid off? Is he worried because his wife is under investigation? Is he worried his name will come up? Is he being blackmailed? Is he being told to?
McConnell shouldn't be trusted, but he shouldn't be underestimated.
The ONLY thing I can think of is that he's planning to flip his support TO HR1 or HR127 and will vote in favor for it, which he knows is a death sentence for his political career, but has worked out a deal with Democrats to make it worth his while. HR1 is the voting bill. HR127 is the gun bill. If McConnell votes in favor of those bills, they only need 9 more Republicans to sway to get them passed and with McConnell being Minority leader, I wonder how many other Senators he can bully, bribe into flipping? He apparently holds a lot of sway and Republican Senators vote the way he tells them.
There's something going on with this and I think there's going to be some kind of play to crush the America First Movement with McConnell planning to step down early.
He wants the assembly to pick his replacement, should that be necessary, because the current governor is a Left-wing loon. It's that simple. The assembly should have taken action on this years ago. No states should have their governor select Senators.
The three picks McConnell suggests are shit (although I don't know anything about the woman other than that McConnell picked her) but they are miles ahead of whatever disaster Herr Beshear would foist upon the country.
The general assembly was always supposed to pick the senators until the 17th amendment, I advocate to repeal it. stuffing ballots is one thing, but getting all state legislatures to vote one way is damn difficult.
This is bad no matter how you look at it.

Repealing amendments is pretty difficult, too.
