They both said how they didn't know much about it but that it had weird traditions and stuff. They said the loved the current pope and that he was a "rare gem". They said the Catholic church should allow gays and women to become priests. They said it was unfair and inhuman to "force" priests to remain celibate.

Imagine knowing you know nothing about a religion and then deciding you have a right to judge it. Absolutely absurd.

You need to read the history again. It wasn't "paternity suits", it was inheritance. The issue was that priests and other clergy didn't really own anything, the church did. But local inheritance laws complicated that. The concept of being "married to God" and being pure also came out at some point. They're two different issues that pushed toward the same outcome.
