In my experience the gal friends who went through the darkest times where sexually abused, had roommate parents, felt so invisible they'd do anything to stand out, and locked in a perpetual rebellious state.
It's doable to pull them out of this tailspin, just takes time to show them this isn't how life has to be. But even then, they'll never really get over their rebellion against "Conservatives", just too old of a habit and I think they can't admit to themselves that these Conservative values would have protected them.
Most of these people aren’t rebelling against conservative parents. Many of them have liberal parents that are so accepting they leave nothing for the kids to rebel against or worse encourage this in their own children so the parents can get woke points.

Unfortunately true. This is usually mental illness caused by abuse.
