I didn't even have any weight issues and that (doing a job where I sit all day) and drinking only water helped me lose almost 30 pounds I didn't know I needed to lose and wasn't trying to lose.
It basically puts refined carbs and fructose at the forefront with the most servings. And essential hormonal foods like fats in addition to protein on the backburner. Basically it tells you not to worry about important macronutrients, vitamins and essential amino acids.
Carbs are the body's first source of energy but the more body fat you gain, the less carbs you should be eating. If you're eating carbs when you're overweight your body is never going to tap into that stored fat for energy and you'll end up in a perpetual state of fat gain if you're in a surplus of calories.
This is what they pushed onto American children since the early 90's when it was introduced. This is when cereal and bread products started becoming popular. Two things you shouldn't be eating for breakfast when you're not at your most active.
The OG food pyramid I believe is one of the largest contributing factors to obesity and declining health in children. I believe the current food pyramids are much better now but the damage has already been done.
