So I was searching around reading about the 6 Dr Seuss books and I noticed there seem to be three different images of the 'racist' caricature in the book 'And To Think That I Saw it on Mulberry Street". Everyone is pointing out the image but nobody seems to explain why there are three versions.
The image of course, is a picture of a Chinese fellow in a pointy hat, hold a bowl and some chopsticks. Each version however, has a different caption and one version has a different skin color than the other.
The first version, the fellow has yellow colored skin in contrast to all the other characters having white skin. The caption reads 'A Chinaman who eats with sticks'.
The second version, the skin is still yellow but the caption reads 'A Chinese boy who eats with sticks'.
The third version, the skin is now white like the rest of the characters and the caption reads 'A Chinese man who eats with sticks'.
So did the book change over the years? Why aren't any news outlets mentioning it? They all just show one version of the picture.
I remember having the book as a boy back in the early 70s, but don't remember which version it was.
