Seen some concerns over a few things today. First, bit late but the lack of thumbnails for a few hours earlier was because we blew threw our agreed bandwidth limit for the proxies that we use for generating thumbnail images.
Normally when the thumbnail generator breaks (it hasn't in a while), we turn it back on, and the posts which were made when the thumbnail generator was offline will be processed retroactively.
In this case, the generator was never offline. It was still processing all new posts and setting their thumbnails to a blank (but processed) value.
We could have sent those posts back through to be regenerated, but we didn't.
The second concern is about how I am no longer on the mod list for The Donald (Patriots).
I am simply focusing on our wider mission to build Win into a social media platform to truly rival big tech. There's no meaningful change with regards to the mod list.
I think there was an old idea of voat where content creators could actually get paid for their content based on how many views it got etc. I think a market place is vital for social media sites these days.
I would also recommend the idea of choosing your own mods. Basically you can see moderating history of different mod potentials, and all their moderation acts as a kind of 'mask' over each other. This may be vital for independently sprung subs. It's the next evolution of reddit style sites. <- if you build it they will come.
This sounds good on paper but my god what a shitshow this would create. Stickies and reposts would tear us apart as people squabble over stolen content and undeserved placement.
We’re an organic community, getting paid for it would make us shills.
That's certainly a danger...
Unless we can find a way to avoid the pitfalls...
Given how risky it is, perhaps it shouldn't be instituted here unless/until we demonstrate that it can work effectively.
But it would make the site much more robust if we could allow content creators (and moderators!) to monetize their efforts without subjecting ourselves to such manipulation. It's worth some thought.
