One obvious example, can anyone else guess what happened at the same time the mask mandates came into place? A mass phycological campaign on the nation designed to scare the shit out of everyone, which worked wonders. People stayed home, stopped going to stores, all sports were shut down, online orders for food and items skyrocketed. Largely, people were scared to death and quit interacting with each other, and washed their hands raw every day.
I'm going to use a little correlation and say that this had more to do with it than a tshirt on your face.
