I have noticed there is a split on the Conservative side between people who are looking at creating the world they want to see long term, and those who are looking to win victories in the short term. The optics people, as you say.
It seems pointless to me to play the optics game because you will never have it as good as the ones who control the media do. Better to say forget the narrative and do the right thing as you see it, but I can understand the temptation.
I think you get it more than most anybody. Optics is primarily determined by the media coverage, I’ve seen really good people smeared by the media who did their best to do everything right. Until you control the media, Caring about optics is a losing game.
Take a look at the other side, they could riot, insult america, openly embrace communism, sniff childrens hair, it didnt matter, media covered for them. Optics doesnt matter, controlling discourse does.
