You’d be better off learning to be an electrician or plumber. I mean, I have great respect for what it takes to major in history, but what benefit will you find in the job market?
I'm a Master Electrician in Texas. Been doing it for 22 years. Started right out of highschool at age of 18 . I entered a 4 year apprenticeship program graduated with a lot of OJT and Book knowledge. Feel in love with the trade . With that being said , it's not the same. Craftsmanship and accountability has failed as the generations have become more laced on quality of work and deadlines became shorter. Which is attainable thru the introduction the ever revolving tech. If I was to tell an 18 year old a good based college or a skilled trade. I still say skilled trade. But , you need to quickly specialize in a field that will have long term stability. Motor Control , Automation and All forms of generators is the path to take right now. We have plenty of 14-16$ electricians that , thanks open borders , made coming into the field as a residential electrician , commercial ( New Construction is a melting pot for illegals ) . The safety man on the electrical company is basically the road block from them getting outted. They will mark you as problematic right off the bat if you go to HR who has the CEO and the Safety checks out in place for these illegal hires. The wage has stayed the same from the 80s but has only gone down in the last 5 years for this type of work. So yes skilled trade/apprenticeship programs are great but make damn sure your always hitting those book to further yourself and go back to trade school to keep up with the times. As you settle in and get involved in service maintance , service technician work . You will see the path you want to take.
