It's not even like Al Qeada were moral puritans. They participate in drugs, alcohol, pre marital sex, etc & justify jihad as erasing those sins.

ISIS after 2009 was far more militant about forcing its own members to not use jihad as an excuse. Thousands of Muslims were executed for just drinking alcohol
