I think put simply his mistake was not focusing on the issues that got him elected. Also I think it was a massive error to try to position himself as the reformer on law and order with the riots going on and characterize his opponents as the racists.
His populist/protectionist economic message in 16 turned into standard Republican boilerplate garbage about the stock market doing well in 2020. Immigration? He mentioned it here or there but again failed to emphasize that issue which was probably primarily responsible for his amazing rise -- not to mention his immigration rhetoric starting to sound hollow given his questionable record while in office on that topic. Then there's foreign policy another one of the main pillars of 16. Unfortunately he'd moved away from the strong and totally true and justified non-interventionist position he won with in 16 to I think rather silly belligerence with nations like China. (BTW his foreign policy record was great I'm not saying it wasn't. No new wars and many historic moments in outreach to previously hostile countries. No one can fault Trump on that.)
Then there's really goofy and misguided things -- no doubt the suggestions of the snakes he had around him -- like all the minoritarian outreach which is so pathetic and a waste of time. Meanwhile the majority who voted him in and would vote for him again -- WHITE PEOPLE -- were left totally ignored and I find it so sickening.
