Being a multi-role, front line fighter, it has to be capable of everything from ground attack, interdiction, combat air patrol, electronic warfare, and air superiority. It's a jack of all trades, which, by nature, makes it a master of none, however this is exactly what the Marines and Navy required... seriously, it's their dream fighter.
Think of it like this... the F-35 was designed to get a stealth plane that can operate as an A-10, a F-16, or an EF-18 Growler, over front line troops or knocking down enemy bombers in 10 minutes. An A-10 can't do this without air superiority, but the F-35 is capable of getting in there to do ground strike, but still be capable of going up against enemy air superiority fighters. It's meant to be able to do that long enough for the dedicated air superiority fighters to arrive. Due to its forward deployment, the F-35 can also get in range of enemy bombers before an interceptor can.
The Air Force currently has the fifth generation platform, fourth generation stealth F-22, which is arguably the deadliest air superiority fighter ever created. The problem with dedicated air superiority fighters is their logistics. They require actual airbases to do what they do. They deploy from hundreds of miles out and enter the fight at a distance.
