The kids in our school district have to wear fucking masks when participating in sports, including track. It's both sad and ridiculous to see them running with masks on. It can't be good for them.
Breathing in your own fetid breath isn't healthy. That's why respirators (the things that actually protect you from harmful airborne contaminates) have an outlet valve. The inlet valves have HEPA filters or other media, such as charcoal, that you need to filter out the bad shit. The outlet valve allows you to exhale and not re-enhale all the CO2, bacteria, and whatever else. (source - I've worn these in previous jobs).
These China made spit tents don't do jack shit. They don't protect you and they don't "protect others" (as the propaganda machine loves to frame it). All they do is prevent your shmoog from splattering onto people in your immediate vicinity. And if you're such an asshole that you sneeze or cough on others, you'll quickly have no friends. Yeah, my wife has to wear a mask all day at work and she has had strep throat and an eye infection over the past few months thanks to the mask.
