You have to read the New Testament like a progressive to ignore all the blatant black and white instructions to exercise grace even to those who have sinned against you. Not to mention the examples of Jesus, Stephen and Paul.
FWIW, the gospels spell out Jesus' motivation and back up that the temple is a special case: As it was written, ZEAL FOR YOUR HOUSE WILL CONSUME ME.

I've known a lot of progressive people who use the word God and talk about higher powers who privately can acknowledge that they have a "God dilemma" and want to find a way to remove Yahweh from faith.
To me, that means some part of them knows they need God, but they're in rebellion and unable to accept God as He is, rather than as they would make Him.
They want to acknowledge souls without being cognizant of souls, too. That's part of the trans movement in a way. Its sort of the idea that "I am a man with a woman's soul" but then there is the concept of souls which has to be avoided. Might be an interesting conversation to bring up some time.
I ran across a very old tranny (apparently, anyway) online once. A real nutcase but not totally incapable of reason. He had gotten interested in souls, possibly for that reason.
Jesus went to the cross, though sinless, and even though he could have smitten them all, praying that God would forgive his persecutors. He told us to take up his cross and follow him.
Stephen did likewise.
St Paul did likewise.
11 of the 12 apostles did likewise.
The Roman martyrs did likewise.
I guess no one thought to tell them Anaconda knows better.
