Unfortunately I couldn't get my son into private kindergarten. He brought me a little book he made about climate change, and he said he was scared that the world is going to end. He is 6.

I sat down with him and told him a bedtime story. I told him that when I was a little girl, my teachers told me that when I grew up, the air outside would be poisonous, the rain would be acid and burn your skin, and that there would be so much trash that the world would be covered in mountains of garbage. They told me that the whales would all be gone, that the world would get too hot and the ice caps would melt and cover all the land in water. I told my son that when I went home from school, I told my daddy, his grandfather, what they said. My daddy, his grandpa, told me that when he was a little boy back a long long time ago, his teachers told him that the world was going to freeze, and all the plants would die and many people would starve. But the world didn't freeze, nor did it heat up so the ice caps melted. There are still whales in the ocean, the rain is just rain, the world isn't covered in trash and the air is cleaner than it was 100 years ago, and there are more trees in our state than back then, too. They have made these predictions for generations and none of them ever come true. I told him not to be afraid, when he's an old man the sun will still shine, the rain will still fall, the grass will still grow and the birds will still sing. He was very relieved and I could see his tension melt away. Talk to your kids. It's the only way to deprogram them before it sticks permanently.

Hey, OKRancher, how is Oklahoma? I have been trying to get my husband to think about abandoning the Soviet State of PA and movingtothe reddeststate in the union, but he's not sure about OK. I like open spaces and lots of land. I need trees though, and I don't do so well in heat. Where are some good places to raise a family?

I live in Western Oklahoma and love it. It gets over 100 often but there is low humidity. There are more trees and more humidity East of I-35. City people are crazy like anywhere. You would probably like the northeast part of the state or eastern Kansas. It can get pretty hot(over 100 for days). You might like Kansas better since it’s farther north. If you stay away from the cities in Oklahoma or Kansas people make great neighbors and most still have good values. This is a great place to raise a family. Depending on you and your husband’s careers, 20 minutes outside a bigger city would be perfect. Tulsa has a lot of lefties though.

ETA: Southwest Missouri is beautiful as well.

What about buying a house on reservation land? Isn't like 80% of the state reservations? How does that work legally?

The eastern half of Oklahoma has a lot more Indians. There was a major court case where they were basically awarded the land but nothing has come of it. I’m technically on Indian land but you wouldn’t know it if you didn’t read the sign on I-40. There are tribal lands where they have their own police and stuff though. I don’t know much about that. I do know people would die if they started trying to take property. Oklahomans don’t put up with that crap. Basically it’s a moot point for the vast majority of the state.
