The problem is that people equate "African" with "Black." Black is specifically Sub-Saharan Africa. Egypt may be on the continent, but it's actually MEDITERRANEAN. Rome, Greece, Egypt, Turkey, Spain and Portugal even, the peoples around the Mediterranean sea, we're all swarthy, and dark compared to the Ultra-Brights up in Sweden and Norway, and even Ireland and England and Scotland and even Germany.... but we're not Black.
And this comes to another real problem: We never made a "White Club" and decided who was white and not white. Every group gave each other shit, for all time, and the guys in charge were the ones giving the shit, and the guys at the bottom were the ones who were like "Okay, well, I'm not a THIS, so this is how life is, oh well." And then after a time, we started to get the fuck over it. Especially in America, where people were (mostly) united by a common Faith (Evangelical Christian, for the most part) and ALSO united by the concept of American Exceptionalism, which is to say "We are the best, because of our actions, and we only let the best come in."
And then it was Black Peoples' turn to deal with shit. And yeah, the shit they dealt with was pretty damn bad, compared to what other groups had to deal with. And then, a shit ton of bloodshed in the ONLY WAR IN HISTORY WHERE A NATION WENT TO WAR WITH ITSELF TO END SLAVERY and some time later, we were again at a point where we were getting over everything. And then the Left decided "Hey, if we tell them they're the Black Club, and the White Club hates them, they'll give us virtual slavery! It's almost as good as Real Slavery!"
And here we are. In a day and age where, after my generation grew up with just as many American Heroes who were "Black" as well as those who were "White," we're back to the point where we need to get over shit. But the group who needs to get over the shit are the ones holding themselves back. And as they harm themselves, they believe the lie that somehow I'M the one harming them.
And now I, as a "White" man who counts Frederick Douglass, Crispus Attucks, and Robert Smalls as three of America's greatest men, find myself often thinking "Man, fucking black people." Not because of any inherent characteristic. Because so, so many today refuse, just outright REFUSE to look at history, to see who is actually oppressing them, and to just fucking STAND UP and say "You know what, I really AM your Equal, and I will stop demanding you do anything for me, because I can take care of myself." Anyone who will stand up and say that is my American Brother.
