I'd say the media will fear monger endlessly and the politicians will, with much deeply expressed concern, drop all their benevolent plans that they had to help us little folk and accept our sacrifice for the good of everyone, and give all our money and military power to foreign countries that hate us as "aid" to prevent doomsday.
