and ironically it's capitalism that allows them to take power here without having to fight a civil war like in Russia
Why do you say that? Our financial institutions are controlled by the government. Our government is basically an appointed mess just like all socialist countries. Our school systems are mandatory and with zero choice or ability to realistically move to a better non-propaganda school. The only things they don't entirely control are the internet and it's the only place we are fighting back in.
Our financial institutions are ostensibly controlled by the government, and the government is controlled by private interests. The politicians aren't there to write bills or decide policy, they're there to collect salaries and get reelected. Lobbyists, interest groups, think tanks, investors, etc. are what actually decide policy.
The school systems aren't mandatory, it's easier than ever to homeschool (thanks to the internet, like you point out) and it'd also be relatively easy to set up proper private schools. What stops stuff like that from happening on a meaningful scale is the enormous propaganda effort undertaken through the entire media industry to keep the population distracted, brainwashed and demoralized.
Lack of voucher programs is the big problem. Most have to pay for school but then have to pay double to go to a school of their own choice.
