From what I have heard and seen from youtubers, no, he is a hack. His movies have the same plot and employ similar techniques. Basically, he got the job thanks to Spielberg and knows how to play the game.
He's an installed hack .. tearing his way through American cultural iconography like a cancer .. making empty flash until no one wants to follow it anymore or emulate the drive and excellence of its debased former paragons.
Industry reviewers refer to his production company, Bad Robot, as 'Bad Reboot'.
Episode VII was actually good and promising. Yes, there’s some rehashing. I was disappointed that Disney killed off the Republic, forcing essentially the rebels to fight the same battle again. The filming seemed similar to the originals. It was VIII and especially IX that were complete crap.
The Star Trek reboot was pretty good, if not performing a bit of fan service. Shot very well. Yes, it was an alternate universe from the TV series The sequel was so-so.

Lens flare shining flashlights at the cameras from just out of the shot.
He did that so much it was very distracting in his trek movies.
...the new star wars movies were just awful all around.

The true test is if he has made a memorable movie. One that will live on in our hearts forever. He hasn't.
He's a hack. He cuts & pastes from directors, scripts & stories.
Star Wars sucks, trying to blame one guy for it sucking isn't gonna work
What an ugly hebe
I personally think that question is framed wrong. To me the question should be
Why do people think JJ Abrams is a director when all the evidence shows the opposite.

Not some.
The entire movie was basically a stealth remake of New Hope, which is why I thought the movie was terrible and offered no promise at all whatsoever.
