I know people in here say that optics don't matter, but assuming he could have had family members look after the dog, you got to remember. If someone has a pet, it humanizes them in people's eyes. Lots of people are affected subconsciously by things like that. Yes, some people do think "oh they have a dog, they're just like me." Even if it was only a few thousand people who thought that, maybe they could have given Donald Trump a chance. Maybe that could have led them to look into his positions, or make them more likely to agree with him. It would have made it ever so slightly harder to demonize him.
