I love not going to the office. My job has been happily trucking along ever since we went 100% remote last March. Saved a fuckton of gas and wear and tear on my vehicle. I get along with my colleagues just fine, but I don't feel the burning need to see them in person. And the time spent driving is better spent sleeping or making myself a nice breakfast that I don't have to gobble up while driving.
I've realized that I can work out just fine at home. I have a bench and some weights and a stationary bike, and when the weather is agreeable I can run and bike outside. There is a perfectly adequate community pool in the neighborhood that costs $20 for a year if I want to swim. Since my equipment is not at all fancy, I paid for it with the equivalent of a couple months' fancy gym fees.
I now see absolutely no reason to go to the movies. It's not like it's a sporting event where you get to feel the sense of community by cheering your team along with a bunch of strangers whom you otherwise don't know from Adam. I can make or order better food than I can get at the movies and drink the same or better beer than I can get at the movies, for a lot less money. And I don't have to put up with someone not being able to keep their goddamn mouth shut or someone's kid going out of his mind.
If the above three things never come back I won't miss them much.
Somewhat similar. We aren’t 100% remote but we’re told to work from home if you can. At least half of the office is back full time. I’m still in and out. I maintain and repair a lot of our equipment too, so I do need to be physically present 2-3 days per week. My job didn’t really require that before I took over, but I started doing it in the winter to add value to me doing the job. I’ve saved at least 40,000$ in equipment replacement/ repairs over the last two years.
However, when I’m not needed to be present I can take all the calls and do everything remotely. I was set up for that long before COVID 1984 too. Back in 2017 I set myself up as the newest field operations manager to take my job into the field...it just made sense being the FOM. COVID hit and I had the easiest year ever. Didn’t need to hire with the economic impact, and didn’t have to be ‘anchored’ to the office for the older guys that liked to walk around with their hands clasped behind their back observing all of their little ants working. I had to drive 3 hours in a blizzard once to be sitting at a meeting I had nothing to contribute to or needed to know JUST for when the top owner at the time walked past and glanced in. That was such bulllshit. And I’m not even a young dude whining about having to go to work here...I’m kind of old and have a very strong work ethic. I just don’t see the point of sitting in a specific building to do a job I can do from a cornfield as long as I have a signal. I do partially understand though...a LOT a of my colleagues are giving like 40% effort and not really doing their jobs half the time, because they aren’t ‘at work’. Some people are like that.
I don’t even like to go out much. Bars and restaurants - not my thing. I can cook better food than most places. Car show? Yes that I do like and like showing my 66 Dodge. Movies? Meh...sometimes but really just prefer to buy the BRD or DVD and watch it at home, then own it forever after. A bit of a gamer too so I can have entire weekends where I don’t leave and I’m fine with it. I also like doing home improvement stuff so gimme a saw and some time and I’m having fun. Camping? Yes. Hiking and state parks? Hell yeah. I just don’t like ‘city slicker’ type activities even though I was born and raised in the inner city.
I can see the merits of that in some cases.
