They are fantasizing about this dream life and this dream job and what a meaningful adventure it would be.
The part where they were duped is most people don’t work those glamorous jobs, and even those jobs, in reality, aren’t as glamorous as they are made to appear. It is all an illusion. So the woman abandons her husband, her children, and her kids and goes to work for minimum wage in an office cubicle with coworkers who hate her and a boss who keeps trying to brush against her tit with his elbow. And on some level she knows she’s been duped, but it almost doesn’t matter, because at least now when she watches the movies and TV shows, she gets to feel a part of the “workforce”. Now all those people going on adventures COULD be her. And that anxiety being pumped into housewives through the screen dissipates. Of course they are now more miserable, but it doesn’t matter. I think it's actually enjoying a bit of a resurgence now, there's tons of blogs and YouTube channels about sewing and knitting, especially historical stuff. I'm 70 years old, and can tell you things have changed much! People are slowly being enslaved to the point where it's difficult for a family to live on one income. For example, when it comes to company providing health insurance, they used to cover everything, no copays and nothing out of your paycheck.
I recently went into a thrift store to get some dvds, and a man with a small child was in line behind me. I heard him say, "Mommy doesn't have to go downtown to work anymore. She's going to stay home with you". It brought tears to my eyes!! Sure they're shopping in a thrift store, but Mommy is going to stay home!!!

So they compare what they see on TV to their current life - cleaning the house, watching the kids - and they feel completely inferior and irrelevant. Then they start imagining themselves in those positions they see on TV: what would their life be like if THEY were the CIA agent, the politician, the NY columnist? And now they are hooked. They are fantasizing about this dream life and this dream job and what a meaningful adventure it would be.
The part where they were duped is most people don’t work those glamorous jobs, and even those jobs, in reality, aren’t as glamorous as they are made to appear. It is all an illusion. So the woman abandons her husband, her children, and her kids and goes to work for minimum wage in an office cubicle with coworkers who hate her and a boss who keeps trying to brush against her tit with his elbow. And on some level she knows she’s been duped, but it almost doesn’t matter, because at least now when she watches the movies and TV shows, she gets to feel a part of the “workforce”. Now all those people going on adventures COULD be her. And that anxiety being pumped into housewives through the screen dissipates. Of course they are now more miserable, but it doesn’t matter. They have conformed to the TV and whatever misery that comes from that is bearable. It’s actually similar to the masks. It’s miserable to conform and just wear the mask all day, but people choose that over the intense anxiety of not following the narrative.
