So been off grid for several years, no job equals no pay, as far as the gov knows. Went to college on the GI bill, was instructed to apply for grants, recently have been informed I need to pay grants back. Never encountered this before but basically it’s now in collections. From what I know if I wasn’t entitled to a grant the school should have notified me instead of giving me the overpayment to pay for school costs yadi yada. Anyone know a proper way to rectify this. Skip the obvious get a lawyer, cuz eventually I shall, but any direct action I can take?

Just realize every inquiry with the feds takes like 30 days to pan out. It will be ongoing for a long time, but just reach out and they will put you on the path that most helps them. The best you can do is drag it out and try to “settle” for a lesser amount than what you “owe.”

If the paperwork is too much for you to handle and the you’re incapable of rooting out methods to protect your interests, you will need that accountant. Just make sure you oversee everything the accountant does and investigate the move he wants to make. Sometimes you just need to get the ball rolling in order to know which forms need to be filled out to best serve you.

Again, drag it out and know that each back and forth will take a long time. Also, be willing to lie in a “best of my knowledge” type of way.

My CPA has told me, a couple years back, that the Feds are looking hard at how they can capture taxes on crypto. That 'seems' to have been confirmed for me when our IT guy, he's a big crypto guy but spends too much and brags... was hit with a huge tax bill. He's fighting to avoid jail, he says, and I know he has been fined tens of thousands. He was shocked to discover the Deep State has the means to trace your crypto. But I suspect he has been involved in , as you put it, off the grid activities.

Just saying.

On the Grants, way back when I was considering them I chose not to take any because some said up front you 'may' have to pay it back. If a Grant comes from a private source you're probably good, but any government or arranged by them grants may be clawed back, yep. Good luck, push to make a deal is probably the best you can hope for, settle up at half or less and be thankful.

I used to work as a tax pro and this his been my beef with school grants all along. Grants are freely given to prospective students with little or no instructions on how they can be used. For example, inner city student gets a grant - grant get used for books, tuition, housing and living expenses. Student gets a 1098-T from the school for tuition and books. (Only if they purchased books from the school, if they were frugal and found them cheaper online, they are SOL) The money used on housing and living expenses is considered income, any monies used not on a 1098-T is considered income. I saw it so many times, it was sad.

Well I’m 1099 so good luck with that. I’m not tax evading just got hit with a grant bill that I didn’t even know I was liable for. As veterans affairs told me to apply for grants

They'll take your bank account. They'll garnish you. I tried to help you and you give me a shitty attitude. Some people have to learn things the hard way.
