The GOP didn't turn into a cult with Trump. The GOP realized that it doesn't own it's voters, they go with people who actually mean what they say. Trump is the canary in the coal mine that people are no longer convinced the GOP is a bastion of conservatism. Now the GOP that has accepted that message and is trying to actually stand by it's alleged principals are being called Trump cultists because Trump is the guy leading the majority of these conservative arguments.
