I think he does get it; McCarthyism is not McCarthy. The idea here is that the weaponization of taking down an opponent by baselessly claiming they are something they may or may not be is bad.

Communism is evil, but in a civil society we can defeat such bad ideas with better ones. Winning an argument by calling someone communist (then) or racist (now) isn't really winning the argument.

But as I understand it there really was a major communist agenda back then, whereas there really isn't any racist agenda of any substance at this point.
And 'civil society'? We don't have that. We have an idiocracy where bad ideas are NOT defeated by better ones. Emotionality-exploiting propaganda wins.
And the marxists have been perfecting the weaponization of propaganda for over half a century now. They've been winning that culture war the entire time. And now here we are.
