Like the meme, but historically it's not really true.

The Eastern and Western factions of the Empire had existed since Diocletian divided it administratively in 285, nearly two centuries before the Western empire fell. There were some, but not many, good times even after this.

But here's where it gets even more like what we're seeing now.

From the third century onward, the Roman empire faced a series of challenges. Though the Eastern and Western Empires were really only divided administratively, the East was spared all the problems that faced the West. Namely, the waves of Gothic immigration. Not invasion, just immigration. This weakened them and made them more prone to invasion in turn. The armies were increasingly "Germanised", and as time went on there wasn't much that kept the Western Roman Empire 'Roman'. It fell apart due to factionalism and division, while the united East stayed strong and continued on for centuries.

Lesson being that we need to keep based states based so they can survive and form a new power when the cucked states fall.
