Gonna disagree with you on this. Overpaying quarterbacks is an annual tradition. Teams do this all the time and have cap space nightmares down the road.
You're giving way too much credit to leagues and teams who decided at some point that it would be good PR to go super woke.
I'm not giving credit to anyone. Just saying you don't give contracts like that if the financial situation is dire. Which means there is more to this story.
Tv ratings and revenue is a lagging indicator AND the China-flu fucked everything up for them anyways. The owners probably think everything will be just fine next year. In the interim, players still demand to be paid and teams will pay them current rates to get them, thinking everything will be normal next year.
