I think there are registries in some states, but most don't have them.
When you buy a gat you fill out the ATF form which is more or less an affadavit that you're able to legally purchase a gat. That form gets kept by the gun shop, not sent into the ATF.
So there is more of a paper trail than I would like (none), but there is no centralized database they can just query to find everyone that bought a gat.
It's not about a "tax" it's about making a database.

Maybe, maybe not, who knows. All the more reason to fab your own.
