Hell is Satan's realm, Satan is the king of the earth and all of the material realm. Earth, money, physical pleasure and bodies all waste away. What's left is our spirit. If you spend your life honing and nurturing your spirit and faith, even in a seeming absence of love and hope, you bring light into the material world and then, I believe you are able to climb out and into the next level.
Also, I'm not a Catholic, so I dont really much believe in classical purgatory unless you are separated from your body, IE dead. I view it as a waiting room, not somewhere you can really live as if you were "alive". But I see what you're saying, that this is a neutral space and it's easy to get lost n this realm, spiritually speaking.
Of course this is just my own opinion, not any one else's. Just sharing my thoughts.
